What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT), also known as Myofunctional Therapy, is an exercise based therapy that involves neuromuscular re-programing. Exercises retrain and provide life-long habits for proper oral-facial function. Improving these habits result in healthier chewing, breathing, swallowing, and resting posture. Implementing new function into every day life for a healthier you.

The four goals of myofunctional therapy:

  1. Nasal Breathing- Breathing through the nose instead of the mouth improves oxygen intake, sleep quality and overall health.

  2. Lips Sealed Together- Lip seal prevents open-mouth breathing and supports overall oral and airway health.

  3. Correct Tongue Position- Proper tongue posture supports optimal breathing, swallowing, and oral development.

  4. Correct Swallowing Pattern- Proper swallowing mechanics can prevent tongue thrust, reduce strain on the jaw, aid in digestion and prevent acid reflux.
